No School

There will be no school on Wednesday, November 23rd due to a grading day.  There will also be no school on Thursday, November 24th and Friday, November 25th in celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday.  Companeros will be in session on Wednesday, November 23rd at ISLA, but they will be closed on Thursday and Friday.  To register for Wednesday click on the following link: http://misamigosimmersion.com/reg-onoccasion.html

Lost and Found

Thank you to the families that checked lost and found for your child’s missing belongings.  We have made a significant decrease in the amount of items in lost and found.  All items not picked up by November 22nd will be donated to a local charity.

Emergency School Closing

The directive to close schools comes from the office of the superintendent of Hopkins Schools.  All local stations announce school closings for Hopkins Schools in the morning before school opens and announce early dismissals due to developing severe weather.  ISLA will not be named individually.  We are included in the announcement obout Hopkins School District #270.  If there is a question as to the possibility of school being closed, please tune your radio to WCCO or other local news stations.  The major local TV stations run a continuous print-out across the bottom  of the screen to keep you informed on school closings.  You can also sign up for e-mail notification regarding closings at the following site:  http://wcco.com/schoolclosings

Please avoid calling the school during this extremely busy time.

Dress for the Weather…

It is time to wear warm jackets, hats, mittens and boots and snow pants.Students go outside every day for recess unless it is raining or the outside air temperature is less than 0º or the windchill is -0º or below.  Exercise and physical activity helps children release their muscle tension after several hours in school and contributes to overall wellness, including cardiovascular and muscular strength and endurance.  Recess also provides an opportunity for students to play and relax outdoors and to socialize.

Sibling Enrollment

Make sure that your child receives the sibling enrollment priority they are entitled to at ISLA.  Submit an online student application for the sibling of a currently enrolled student by the sibling enrollment deadline of February 14,, 2017 at 4:00 p.m.  Any student applications for a sibling received after the deadline will follow regular enrollment processes.

News from the Board

The ISLA School Board met on Tuesday, November 15th at 6:30pm. Here are some key items that were discussed by members of the ISLA School Board:

  • PTO presentation from Matt Stockhaus about roles and responsibilities of the PTO. Dia de los Muertos event at ISLA was very successful and a huge thank you to all volunteers, particularly Kris Bilardi and Melany Terrazas. Give to the Max Day is a huge focus and the PTO hopes to meet the goal set in 2015.
  • A new drinking fountain will be installed shortly in the gym/cafeteria. This will allow students to fill water bottles inside the cafeteria/gym and alleviate traffic around the cafeteria. The drinking fountain was made possible by a grant from an ISLA parent!
  • The new ISLA website is up and running! More functionality will be added in the coming weeks.
  • The International Day of Tolerance was Wednesday, November 16.  The teachers had the students write a tolerance statement.  The election has been stressful for many schools.  ISLA will be focusing on many international days as part of our focus on being global citizens.
  • The measuring for our green space has been happening.  We currently have the approval of our plans from Nine Mile Creek Watershed District and Bruce has met with the city of Minnetonka regarding our plans.  Some things will have to wait until school is out, but the goal to start working on the green space initiative is mid-April.  There was discussion regarding fundraising for the green space which will be followed up with more conversation and strategic planning from the fundraising and marketing committees.
  • The Data Practice Policy was approved and adopted by the Board.

If you would like to be involved with a committee that serves the Board, we would love to have you. Please see the ISLA school website for committee information: http://isla.school/board/board-committees
