RE:  Property Search Update

Queridas Familias,

I know that it is not spring yet, but the feeling is definitely in the air.  Last weekend there were sightings of Minnesotans in shorts, skiing in tank tops, and even some folks in flip flops in the grocery store.  But as you know--Old Man Winter has not breathed his last breath, so it is not yet time to put away the winter garb, which we are reminding our students of every day.

However, as Konstantin Lëvin stated in the novel Anna Karenina,  it “is the time for plans and projects,” and today I have an update on our search for a new building.

After months of searching, the ISLA Affiliated Building Company (ISLA ABC) has located a building which is a viable option. This is an exciting opportunity, and we are pursuing it with a non-binding Letter of Intent.  Although it is a non-binding offer, it is still a very important step in the process of finding ISLA a new home. As you know, we have an enticing purchase offer on our current property which has prompted this search.  The potential new property is located in the Edina School District, not far from our current location, and if we were to bring this to fruition, this move would not take place until the summer before the 2021-2022 school year.

Although we are still in the preliminary stages of negotiation, what is intriguing about this property is that this transaction would allow us to get everything we need and want, and will accommodate our steady growth.  It would provide an exhilarating and extraordinary boost to our educational programming.   As it is a larger building, we would be able to construct a dedicated gymnasium space, and have better options for performing arts.  We would be able to plan for numerous break out spaces for small group learning, a bigger teacher’s lounge, more curricular choices, a separate cafeteria, and more. We would have an enhanced and more usable green space for the playground, for outdoor learning opportunities, and better alternatives for drop-off and pickup. Many of these amenities might be prohibitively expensive at our current location.

As we determine options for busing, we are invested in providing busing for students who currently receive transport services, as well as expanding these options to accommodate those students who don’t currently receive busing.

We will have some designs to show at a listening session to be scheduled just after Spring break.   In the meantime, we welcome your comments and questions; please email them to this address:  building@isla-academy.org

Atentamente,

Jeremy
