Extracurricular Activities

The fall session of extracurricular activities is done with the exception of 6th Grade Math Enrichment. The winter session will begin the week of January 13th. Here is what is being offered:

Mondays:

  • The Art of Origami with Srtas. Xochilt and Lily. Grades 1-6. Maximum 15 students. 8 sessions - $64.00
    Learn How to make shapes and figurines out of paper using the ancient art of origami - folding paper. We will create a new shape each week, perfecting our skills and adding to our collection.
  • Zumba/¡QUÉ EL RITMO NO PARE! with Srtas. Marta and Cris. Grades 1-6. Maximum 20 students. 8 sessions - $64.00
    This workshop0 is based on Latin rhythms such as Zumba, merengue, bachata, salsa, etc. Dancing is an aerobic form of exercise which has a lot of physical benefits. It also helps with the child's development and improves some of these relevant aspects: coordination, mood, and range of motion. In this class, we will actually use the body as an instrument of expression and communication. Students will be able to feel confident in a comfortable atmosphere. The last class will be a performance for family and friends! Groups will be split depending on the age. VAMOS A BAILAR!!!

Tuesdays:

  • Photography 101 with Srta. Monica and Sr. Carlos. Grades 5-6, Maximum 15 students. 9 sessions - $72.00
    In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to get to know more about photography. They will learn how to capture the best angles, light, and environment. As we explore the world of expressing ourselves through the lens of digital imagery, students will be able to distinguish two essential parts about the art of taking photos; first, artistry and second, technique. Together, we will plan an exhibition of our best photographs and a final project. Photos may also appear in the yearbook! If you have taken this class in the fall, new material will be covered in this session.
  • Learn to Play the Guitar with Srs. Yeison and Felipe. Grades 4-6. Maximum 10 students. 9 sessions - $72.00
    Are you interested in learning how to play the guitar? Learn how to play Colombian or South American music, specifically Andean Music, on guitar in this session! In this class, students will develop musical skills and study traditional music from Colombia and South America. They will know how to mix rhythms and harmonies in a way that helps create complex connections in their brain that is useful to enrich their bodies and minds. Music is another way to communicate - come learn yet another language! If you have a guitar, or can borrow one, please bring it with you each week. The last class will be a concert for parents and friends!

Wednesdays:

  • Young Rembrandts with Mr. Bob. Grades K-6. Maximum 20 students. 10 sessions - $109.00
    Enjoy learning the technics of drawing with Mr Bob. Class begins on January 15 and goes through March 18. This is a 10 week session for only $109. Classes start at 3:35 and end at 4:35 pm. Please pick up your child promptly. **Register at Young Rembrandts: http://bit.ly/islawin20 **
  • MinecraftEDU 1-2 with Sr. Edgar. Grades 1-2. Maximum 8 students. 10 sessions - $80.00
    MinecraftEDU is a specialized version of Minecraft for educational environments that incorporates IB principles. These activities promote teamwork, friendship, and creativity through true edutainment.

Thursdays:

  • MinecraftEDU 3-4 with Sr. Edgar. Grades 3-4. Maximum 8 students. 9 sessions - $72.00
    MinecraftEDU is a specialized version of Minecraft for educational environments that incorporates IB principles. These activities promote teamwork, friendship, and creativity through true edutainment.
  • Chess with Terry. Grades K-6. Maximum 20 students. 9 sessions - $72.00
    This class begins on Thursday, January 16th and goes through March 19th. Want to amaze your friends and impress your opponents? Want to increase your IQ while having fun playing chess and compete for various prizes? Learn from Twin Cities Chess Club instructors who have years of experience. Competitive Chess tournaments are scheduled once a year and students can play for real chess trophies! All levels are welcome. We have a great instructor for this class but he is not a Spanish speaker.

ISLA Spirit Blanket Donations


We are seeking donations of ISLA Spirit Wear T-Shirts (Se Hable Espanol) from all grade levels to be used for a ISLA Spirit Blanket for the Fiesta de la Primavera auction.

Non-Uniform Day

ISLA will have a non-uniform day on the last day of school before winter break on Friday,December 20th.  Please have students follow the non-uniform dress code on our website under the Families tab and then the Handbook tab.

Join the ISLA Board of Directors!

Looking for away to support the mission and shape the future of our amazing school? Join the ISLA Board of Directors!  The ISLA Election and Nominating Committee is seeking interested community members, teachers,and parents, grandparents, and guardians to fill several upcoming vacancies on the ISLA Board beginning June 30, 2020.  No previous experience is required, but we do have a specific need for individuals with expertise in education, marketing, or fundraising. The Board is responsible for overseeing the general operations of the school,implementing policies and procedures, and long-term strategic and financial planning.  In addition, there are a number of different committees on which Board members serve. Click here for descriptions of the various committees. The Board meets in the evening on the third Tuesday of each month.

If you are interested in seeking a Board seat, please submit a Statement of Interest(available here) to the Election and Nominating Committee by February 1.  Questions about Board service and the election process can be directed to Liz Crouse, Chair of the Election and Nominating Committee, at lcrouse@isla-academy.org. The election of Board Directors will occur in connection with ISLA’s annual meeting on May 19, 2020.
