Emily Smith

Administrative Assistant

Queridas Familias,

Every year, the last month of the school year is a bustling, exciting time; this May is no different, and great things are happening allaround the building.

  • For     example, earlier this month, the 4th graders finished their business unit with a lucrative fair, somehow convincing all of us to buy more bracelets,     play more games, and eat more treats than we expected to. They ended up with a profit of $ 1,917, and expressed their creative agency by allocating 40% of the profits toward reducing the costs for the 5th Grade school trip to Wolf Ridge next year, another 40% was donated to Feed my Starving Children, and the balance will be applied to their final field trip/party at Lone Lake.
  • Meanwhile, the 6th graders embarked on their exhibition projects and dove into their research in earnest, meeting with mentors, interviewing contacts, and how to apply research to creating action items relating to their United  Nations Sustainable Development Goal.
  • This month, at the Fiesta de La Primavera, the ISLA community raised over 50,000 dollars---Thank You!!  As most of you know, the funds raised from the Fiesta allow us to continue with our Language Ambassador program, and allow them to do their important work in the classroom and in the     community.
  • At ISLA we believe that students deserve respectful and inclusive learning environments that value students’ gender identity and gender expression. Toward that end, the board has been supportive of establishing a Gender Inclusion Policy to reflect that as well as address specific concerns which may arise in this context, and will be considering this policy at the next board meeting.

                                    Atentamente,

                                   Jeremy

Urgent Message from the PTO Board:

ISLA is a truly amazing community in which our children are nurtured in mind and spirit to become critical and creative thinkers, and caring and informed global citizens.  From our amazing LA program to class parties, field trips, uniform exchange, lunch volunteers, Dia de los Muertos and the yearbook, so much of this would not exist without the contributions of our ISLA parents.  Your involvement is critical to the continued success of the programs the PTO supports at ISLA!

We are currently in need of volunteers to fill these board positions:

PTO Communications/Secretary
PTO LA Coordinator(s)

We are also looking for help with the following committees:

Fundraising
Social Events
Room parents
Fiesta de la Primavera

We are most concerned that we currently do not have coordinators for our LA program next year. Our LA program is the pride of ISLA and touches our students’ lives in so many ways, but we need your help to keep it going.  This position can be shared to distribute the work and forms, procedures and support from previous LA coordinators will be available to help with the transition.  Please help keep this amazing program running!

For all of the positions listed above, support is available to help you learn the ropes.  You don’t need special skills, just a willingness to do your part.

Please contact Ginnie Pollen at PTOchair@isla-academy.org  if you are interested in serving on the PTO board in either of these capacities or on any of the following committees.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

The ISLA PTO Board

Student Dress for Field Day

Field Day will be a non-uniform day. Children should wear athletic and comfortable clothes and sneakers (no flip-flops). Also remember to pack a water bottle and sunscreen in your child's backpack.

Box Tops are going digital!

As of this June, you will start to see the new digital Box Tops and with that will be a brand new app with which you will simply be able to scan your store receipt, find participating products and instantly add Box Tops to ISLA’s earnings online!  Parents will be able to see the school’s earnings through the app at any time. This should serve as a great motivator as each one of us will be able to see the earning grow firsthand. We will keep you posted once the new app is available.

In the meantime….  Please continue bringing in your clipped Box Tops. All Box Tops will continue to be accepted until their expiration date.  If you happen to spot the new digital Box Top icon on packages before the new app is available, you can download the current Box Tops Bonus app, select the bonus offer and scan your receipt. Hello Families,

Just a few updates from the Media Center!

There were 58 reading records turned before and after World Book Day in April.  The total number of minutes read was 10,746 minutes. Good work to all who participated, and let’s see if we can raise the number next year!!

Since we need to do a complete inventory in the library, I’m asking for all the books to be returned by May 31. This week was the last time classes could check out books. Please look around your houses for the ISLA books! If you can’t find them, fine notices will also be sent out. Thanks so much for your help in bringing all our books back in!

Thank you,

Sra. Lisa Yepes
