            The Exhibition

Sixth-graders are putting together the final pieces of a year-long collaborative inquiry process called the Exhibition. The Exhibition is a culminating project that takes place in the final year of the Primary Years Program. It is now time for the students, after being a part of an IB world school since kindergarten, to create their own unit of inquiry.

The students use all that they have learned throughout their years at ISLA to engage in in-depth research of real-world global challenges.  This requires that each student, working collaboratively with with others, demonstrates engagement with the essential elements of the IB program: knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes and action.  During this process the students identify, investigate and offer solutions to real-life issues or problems.

The students use the United Nations 17 Goals for Sustainable Development as a platform to choose what issues are most important them. By framing the unit of inquiry around the transdisciplinary theme “Sharing the Planet” students develop an understanding that they are members of a global community that need to take responsibility for taking care of our shared resources, to work together to find ways to resolve conflict and to live in peace. It is a dynamic  process that inspires everyone to be change makers in their communities.

This year’s Exhibition will be presented to the ISLA community on Thursday, May 30 at 6:30. The Exhibition represents a significant event in the life of a PYP school and student. We look forward to sharing this experience with our ISLA community!

Thank you to the ISLA community! We feel so appreciated!

Hello Families,

Just a few updates from the Media Center!

There were 58 reading records turned before and after World Book Day in April. The total number of minutes read was 10,746 minutes. Good work to all who participated, and let’s see if we can raise the number next year!!

Since we need to do a complete inventory in the library, I’m asking for all the books to be returned by May 31. Next week will be the last time classes will come to check out books, as well. Please look around your houses for the ISLA books! If you can’t find them, fine notices will also be sent out. Thanks so much for your help in bringing all our books back in!

Thankyou,
Sra.Lisa Yepes

Box Tops are going digital! As of this June, you will start to see the new digital Box Tops and with that will be a brand new app with which you will simply be able to scan your store receipt, find participating products and instantly add Box Tops to ISLA’s earnings online!  Parents will be able to see the school’s earnings through the app at any time. This should serve as a great motivator as each one of us will be able to see the earning grow first hand. We will keep you posted once the new app is available.

In the meantime….  Please continue bringing in your clipped Box Tops. All Box Tops will continue to be accepted until their expiration date.  If you happen to spot the new digital Box Top icon on packages before the new app is available, you can download the current Box Tops Bonus app, select the bonus offer and scan your receipt. Thanks parents and let’s earn extra $$ for our great school!

Teacher Appreciation

Thanks to all those that contributed to the Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week! Some of the highlights:

  • Students wrote messages to create the Appreciation Garden with 800+ messages collected on 400+ flowers!
  • Students created flower bouquets and butterflies
  • Sidewalks were filled with drawings and messages of gratitude by students and parents
  • Notes of appreciation and treats were delivered throughout the week from parents and students
  • The PTO provided the staff with snacks, breakfast, and a catered lunch. And one lucky teacher won a massage!

THANK YOU TO ALL THE ISLA TEACHERS AND STAFF! WE APPRECIATE ALL THAT YOU DO!
