World Book Day-Tuesday, April 23

World Book Day was proclaimed by UNESCO in 1995 as a worldwide day of celebration of books and copyright. They chose this date as it is a day when many authors either were born or died. We remember the contributions of these and all authors and publishers for the promotion of literature and literacy throughout the world. At ISLA, we will celebrate this day in several ways, and would like to enlist your help at home for a few of our activities.

  • Take a “shelfie”(photos of students reading in unique or interesting places). Please send these photos to school for a display in the foyer.
  • Starting on April 12 and ending on April 19, we’re asking students to write down the number of minutes they read. They will also be keeping track of how many minutes they are reading in the classroom.
  • Lector misterioso (Mystery Reader) If you’d be interested in reading to a class, either in the library or in a classroom, please send me a message with the time you’re available and the book you’d like to read. If you prefer to read to a specific classroom or grade level, please let me know, as well. lyepes@isla-academy.org

I will also do an activity with all students during their library times where they will draw a picture of their favorite book and write about why it is their favorite. Those will also be displayed as recommendations for the readers at ISLA.

Next week, I will be explaining all the activities to the students and giving them a little reminder note of all the activities they can participate in as we celebrate the power of books!

Thank you for all your help with this celebration!
